Visit the Soudan Underground Laboratory

DPF96 will organize a visit to the University of Minnesota's Soudan Underground Physics Laboratory on Friday, August 16.

The Soudan Laboratory, 220 miles north of Minneapolis, is approximately one-half mile (a three-minute elevator ride) underground. It currently houses the Soudan 2 proton decay detector, as well as a double beta decay experiment. Soudan is also the proposed site for the MINOS Detector, which is part of the Fermilab NUMI long- baseline neutrino oscillation experiment.

Visitors to Soudan will have the option of also visiting the historic portion of the Soudan Mine - the last and deepest area mined - on a 3/4 mile train ride operated by the Division of State Parks, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The temperature in the mine is a cool 50º, and some uneven flooring may be encountered. Warm clothing is recommended.

DPF96 participants and companions may travel to Soudan by either chartered bus or private car. A small charge of $35 will be made to cover bus travel and lunch. The trip will leave the Twin Cities on Friday morning, and return in the evening.
