The MINOS (Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search) experiment, will
search for neutrino oscillations
(either
µ->

or
µ->
e)
with unprecedented precision. Observation of these oscillations would
be conclusive evidence that neutrinos have mass.
MINOS will be located
1/2 mile underground in an iron mine at the
Soudan Underground Mine State Park in northern Minnesota.
(This mine is currently the site of the Soudan 2 proton-decay
experiment.) MINOS, a magnetized tracking
calorimeter, will weigh 5,000 Tons and will be the target of an
intense beam of neutrinos from the Main Injector at the Fermi National
Accelerator Laboratory near Chicago (Fermilab). It is expected to start
collecting data in 2004.
